“Maybe in
a perfect world, all writers would have their own ready auditor: a
teacher, a classmate, a roommate, or an editor who would not only listen
but draw them out, ask them questions they would not ask themselves.”
- Stephen North
in “The Idea of a Writing Center”

Have you ever
wished you had someone who would read your paper, listen to your ideas,
and help you express yourself? Now you do!
Our
staff offers assistance with writing across the
curriculum, including, but not limited to, expository writing, creative
writing, personal writing, and any other form of written expression. In
the Shasta College Writing Center, a student can try out ideas and
writing strategies while receiving immediate feedback. Tutoring
appointments are highly interactive. Trained in the process of inquiry
and collaboration, our tutors will work along with you at any stage of
your writing such as:
* fighting writer’s block.
* focusing on a topic.
* brainstorming.
* developing and supporting a
thesis.
* outlining and organizing.
* revising for clarity.
* editing the finished draft.
* revising a graded writing
assignment.
Our goal is
to help you become a better writer by assisting you in understanding
your specific rhetorical situations and how they shift from discipline
to discipline. In addition, through the process of inquiry and
collaboration, our tutors are able to guide you in learning how to
critique and revise your own writing.

How can I arrange
for a tutoring session?
Anyone
wanting help with writing can drop in at the center for a session; if a
tutor is available, you can get started on the next half hour! Or, you
can first make an appointment -- either by telephone (225-4689) or by
stopping by the Writing Center (Room 208 in the Shasta College LRC/Library).
Appointments
are usually one-half hour. For longer papers, five pages or more, we
schedule appointments for at least one hour. It is usually helpful to
make several appointments throughout the writing process.
All tutoring is FREE!
For an appointment, call (530)
242-7589.
The atmosphere in our tutoring sessions is one of productive
collaboration.
